The reporter sent me the following by private mail (Stan, please don't use email, but use the bugs.kde.org interface directly in the future!):

By obscuring, I mean the underlying text data is there but only visible if I select the color band with my mouse.

I have attached two snapshot files to show what's happening.  The snapshot3.png shows that the text is visible if highlighted with my mouse.

By-the-way, I do have the same color band problem in the Ark & Digikam programs but they only show up when launched in the kde-3.5.6 environment.  If I start the same programs from my kde-3.4.2 environment there is no color band problem. Sorry if I gave you the impression that Kmail was the sole cupprit. but the bug report wanted to hear about kde-3.5.6 pkg applications not about general kde applications.

Thank you for your quick reply & I hope I gave you more relevent information this time.  I'm sort of new at this bug reporting thing.

Changing product to kdelibs then.
Stan, maybe your colors are incorrectly configured in the control center?
Please check (in the control center) Appearance & Themes->Colors and try if changing you color scheme helps.
