Subject: Timeline out of sync

Dear all,

I have a strange problem since today: in my project, a clip (let's call it
clip.mp4) is part of the timeline, showing its name "clip.mp4", when I right
click, then Clip in Project Bin, clip.mp4 is shown in the clip monitor. But
when I play the timeline, instead of clip.mp4, another clip is played (let's
call it other.mp4). How is this possible and can it be fixed somehow?

When doing a Preview Render of this section, also other.mp4 is used.

some clip, all following clips are shifted by one clip. Strange...

No, not only in this sequence, also in another sequence I worked on earlier
today, all clips shifted by one...

Also in other sequences...

That's really a problem, oh oh.

Any ideas, please?

Hmmm, odd situation indeed.

Are you by any chance using variable framerate clips? You're using the
latest version right?

I would say, upload the project file, hopefully it helps the devs debugging
this.

Going back to an older version of my project file doesn't help either!

What the hell happened with my project?

I didn't anything special, I just went through the timeline of my sequences,
deleting some clips or changing their in and out points. Suddenly, I noticed
this problem.

Any idea how I can recover this project? I do have backups, also on external
disks, but since it doesn't help to load an (much) older project file, I don't
have hope this will fix my problem :-(

I use proxy clips and I think yes, there are some clips with variable frame 
rate in this project, but not what I worked on today.

I deleted all clips which are not from my camcorder and as such could have 
variable frame rates, then saved with a different file name, closed kdenlive, 
reopened the new file - didn't change anything.

I try to attach my file (the one before I deleted those clips), what's 
corrupted is for instance:

Sequence "12: Februar bis Celerina", first clip: in the timeline it's called 
"2023-02-03_C0055.MP4", if I right click, then go to clip in project bin, this 
C0055 is selected. But what's played in the project monitor is C0054 (see 
attached screenshot 2). Also what I don't understand: what's this [0|6] in the 
project bin behind where C0054 is listed?
Project bin -> clip -> right click -> clip in timeline lists 0:00 for C0055 - 
and is greyed out for C0054, although this [0|6], so it should be used?

When I just opened the project, I got what is shown it screenshot 1: I've 
never seen this in the clip monitor before. Something is dying?

If I open an older version: same problem
If I open the project with an older appimage version: same problem
If I open it as another user: same problem

I'm absolutely sure, that my description of the problem is correct and that 
this happened yesterday during an ~ 1 h editing session; in the beginning, 
everything was ok, now it's completely broken. And I've no clue what happened 
and why... (And there's about 20 hours work in this project.......)

You talk about Kdenlive 24.05.1 version. Did you start your project with this version, or was 
it started on a previous version, and which one?

I am asking because it is a kind of corruption that was happening in the 23.08 and 24.02 
version but should be fixed in 24.05.x

The timeline clip circled in red in your screenshot does indeed reference an incorrect bin 
clip. I am sending you privately a version where I have fixed it, but there may be other 
incorrectly linked clips in the project, not sure.

I will try to include some extra checks to avoid such errors to go undetected on project 
opening.

If there are other issues with the project file, as I said please open a bugreport where we 
can discuss this. Best regards

Also, many users are not aware of it but Kdenlive keeps a copy of each saved 
version of a project. If you open your project and go in "Project > Open 
Backup", you will see a list of all saved versions and can try to recover the 
last valid one.

Just an update on this issue for the list:
I worked with the reporter on the corruption experienced in this report. While the exact cause of the corruption remains unclear, I have a patch allowing to automatically recover such issue on opening and preventing it to happen again.

It is currently in the work/control-id branch and under testing. It will be merged for the 24.08 release soon.
