[kdenlive] Main guide does not appear in timeline

Hello,

I am new to kdenlive. I have watched several videos and read a number of 
tutorials but found that my version of kdenlive does not behave the same 
as what I am seeing on youtube.

I import a clip and drag it to the timeline but when I select play under 
the video the guide that tracks the position that the video in the 
timeline does not appear. If I select the clip in the timeline and click 
along the timeline I sometimes get a red tick mark and sometimes the 
timeline 'inverted triangle and vertical line' appears but the video 
display does not move the the selected position on the timeline.

I have tried this with several different files and several projects.

I am using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with the Classic Fallback Option and 
Kdenlive Version 0.9.10.

If I run the Config Wizard the only thing not checked is the DV module.

Anyone have any suggestions how to setup or configure kdenlive properly?
