At some point, I had problems with my editor which inserted strange chars in 
debug strings, so I guess the changes in encoding are probably fixing these 
issues.

Yes, no problem. I made a quick test and your patch seems to work (there is 
just one typo: mtl -> mlt). I can take a look at the document converter when 
you have released the new MLT.

How are you going to proceed the MLT change in svn? Are you going to move the 
current MLT to a branch / tag and make the new one become trunk?
