auto-hiding it's not good imho, it's not natural and users would be
confused (and personally i want to see the timeline while i play with
the preview monitor). a button could be the right way

and so you'd leave visible the monitor and the resources list? why not
a fullscreen preview (at the moment i undock the monitor and expand it
to the whole screen), then? the list isn't that useful while you
preview a video, and probably it's also easier than moving away parts
of the gui (and less "crash-y")
