Ok, I can reproduce it. Seems like a bug in FFmpeg or MLT. The MLT avformat 
consumer crashes with current FFmpeg svn.
Reproducable with the following command:

inigo video.mpg -consumer avformat:test.mpg

It worked fine with FFmpeg revision 15261
