Tried on an OpenSuse 10.1 and no crash here. I can create a text clip, add it 
to timeline, edit it...

The only difference I can see is that I have a more recent KDE version. Could 
you upgrade your KDE / Qt to a more recent version ? Maybe also check your 
gdk-pixbuf.

Packages installed on my test system:

kdelibs3-3.5.4-24.2
qt3-3.3.6-158.1
gdk-pixbuf-0.22.0-93
