Scripting might be an option to releave the programmers from 
implementing new functions. However it would require a scripting API 
which, i think, is currently not in place. The choice of the scripting 
language could be python, perl or some other language.

On the other hand is a seamlessly integrated function more userfriendly 
than anything you could accomplish with a plugin.
