I tried the patch.

The progress dialog pops up very quickly and then disappears, which is 
probably correct.  And there is no crash.

The only problems are:
 1) the web browser isn't started
 2) the pop3 kioslave is killed in KMail and doesn't want to restart.
     I had to logout of the desktop, then back in again, to get pop3 working.
