That's useful, and solves the problem.
Also useful (I don't think I had thought of looking at qdbus) are:
qdbus org.kde.kdeconnect /modules/kdeconnect/devices/<device> isReachable
and
qdbus org.kde.kdeconnect /modules/kdeconnect/devices/<device>/sftp isMounted
