Window position after restart

This has always been a hit-and-miss feature. the KWindowSystem fw. has (had?) functions for re/storing window positions but it's not very clear what central component uses them if an application doesn't call them explicitly.

Except for 1 pesky Firefox window mine always come up on the right desktop, only the 2 terminal windows that constitute my saved session sometimes swap places on their designated desktop. IIRC I've had to define KWin rules for a few applications so they'd open on the right desktop, though.

I'm guessing you're using a Wayland-based desktop? That *probably* means the entire positioning aspect is handled between the application itself and the composer (KWin) without possibility for other processes like the good old ksmserver to play their part(?). Seems I'm not entirely wrong in sticking with my "frankendesktop" that's still Plasma4 underneath...! :-/
