I would suggest upgrading KDE to the latest stable. I was facing the
same problem when I was using KDE (<=4.5) on openSUSE and Slackware,
now I am using gentoo (4.6.5) and it works fine.
What I had figured out was that this has something to do with the AC
cable not plugged in before the screen is locked. I really don't know the
reason why it happens, but as a workaround I used to let the computer
suspend itself before taking out the power cord, and doing the same
(plugging it in) before opening the lid again. This seems to solve it on
my machine.
