Local Wordpress on Fedora 14

I want to experiment with Wordpress, so it seemed a good idea to set up a
local copy. Or maybe not. :-) I started following the guide http://www.if-
not-true-then-false.com/2010/install-wordpress-on-fedora-centos-red-hat-rhel/
- until I got to step 3 - connect to mysql as root. How do you do that when
you haven't set up passwords? I must be missing something really obvious, but
I'm absolutely stuck. Can someone kick me in the right direction please?
