Maybe. I tried also updating to 4.4b3 from a 4.3.2 clean install, and
got the same problem. Therefore, if this is the case, it is a
packaging issue.

I will try that, the system in question has been retired as I have
reinstalled the distro on a different partition (with KDE SC 4.3.4) as
I need Kaddressbook to work, but I do have that partition handy still.
