In any case, I have had far more problems with *nix installations than
I ever had with a Microsoft one. Far to many times I have found that
after installing a new product, other packages were broken because the
new program updated/overwrote or just plain removed a library needed by
a previously installed program, thereby forcing me to recompile the
aforementioned products again to get them in serviceable condition.

I will agree that in most cases, irregardless of the operating system, I
virtually never install the release version of the program or operating
system itself. I have no desire to be a guinea pig.
