I agree. I would vote for 'TAR.GZ' or 'tar.gz'...

Yes, "Here" just does create a tar.gz for me. A useless menu entry.
'TAR.BZ2' or 'tar.bz2' would be a good enhancement, I agree.
What do you mean by "that new ZIP format"? I have 'ZIP' in the list, and 
it creates a ZIP (as in PK Zip) archive.

Yes, it works perfectly here (Gentoo packages, KDE 4.3.2).

I just downloaded your file and could un-'tar -xzf' it without a problem 
(there was a message from tar though, that I don't get often). See my 
shell session:
