can't switch off virtual display switch applet

I've just upgraded with the latest openSuSE packages to KDE 4.2.86
`release 125', and now I get a centered, big applet if I switch
virtual displays (either with the mouse or with keyboard shutcuts).  I
have expected that this is either a mini program or a new feature of
the virtual desktop switcher mini program.  Apparently, it is neither
of them.  Any idea how I can switch off this thing or how to configure
it?  For me, it is very annoying since it stays far too long on the
desktop.
