No "single instance" mode for Kate in KDE 4?

In KDE 3 I was able to configure Kate to always open new instances in
an existing instance, with the new file listed in the Documents
sidebar. I do not remember the exact options used, but it worked. In
KDE 4.2.3 (Kubuntu 9.04 with KDE PPA) I am unable to configure this.
Googling led me to this:

Is it really the case that in KDE 4.x Kate cannot have a single instance?

Note: I do not want to have a session restored when opening Kate for
the first time, which is the only workaround that I've found thus far.
