How to enter non-preconfigured Unicode characters with the keyboard

In Gnome one can enter Unicode characters with
Ctrl-Shift-U-unicodeNumber. This is convinient for entering characters
that are not on the keyboard and have not been preconfigured in
KcharSelect or other similar application. How is this done in KDE?
Googling the subject I see lots of info on Windows and Gnome, and lots
of people asking about KDE, but no answers.

I honestly think that this is not possible in KDE, so if this thread
goes unanswered I ill simply file an RFE. Thanks.
