In Fedora 11 I use networkmanager with the plasma widget in the panel, and it 
works perfectly.  I don't know what Mandriva uses in the panel, but that also 
works perfectly.  Both run KDE 4.2.x.

At one  point in the early days of KDE4 I did try knetworkmanager, and no, it 
didn't work, but it turned out to be a KDE3 app,  Have you checked the version 
of yours?  I don't recall ever seeing that it was ported to KDE4.

Try the plasma widget instead.
