Dolphin says 0 B free

I started dolphin from a root konsole, then looked at /sys/class/leds - it is 
empty.  At the bottom of the screen it says 

No items (No Folders, No Files)			0 B free
and a progress bar runs back and forth across the '0 B free'.  There is high 
cpu activity at the same time.  According to top, it is in the region of 38% 
X, 32% dolphin and 9% kwin.

I wonder what that activity is doing, and just what has 0B free?
