  Not sure if this helps or not, but on my KMail, the folder
settings (under the "Folder" menu in the top bar) have 
"Thread messages" and "Thread messages also by subject" -- 
I have both of those turned on in the folders where I have
mailing lists.

  Of course, I'm also using KMail 1.9.5 on KDE 3.5.5, but
maybe the newer one still has those options?
