System Tray problem

My experiments with 3D desktops were disastrous, so I switched everything off
and expected to return to my old desktop. Much is as expected, but the
system tray has disappeared. If I try to put it onto the panel it sits at
the far right, with just one icon showing and the rest sitting behind the
panel. There's no way I can get to the mixer or the clipboard, for instance.
It's not the end of the world - I can have a system tray on the desktop, which
is what I'm doing for now, but does anyone know how I can return the system
tray to its rightful place?
(btw, this is Mandriva with 4.0.4.)
