(2) questions on KDE 4.1

Just  re-installed Ubuntu with kubuntu desktop on my new 160 GB HD and
really learning to love it.
Two concerns I have not timed it, but it periodically reboots to the sign on
screen for no apparent reason except I probably have something configured
incorrectly.
The other question is the icons on the desktop. How do I position them so
they are in place and stay there. I tried lock screen, but that is not it.
Please advise and have a wonderful Thanksgiving
