Can't find a panel setting

No - this must be a different  version :-)  The focused application button is 
always darkened.  Hovering over a button does lighten it, and also gives an 
information popup, which I'd prefer to switch off, but there is definitely no 
space whatsoever between the buttons.  I've tried moving very carefully and 
slowly from one button to another, and there is not a moment when neither are 
selected.
