New KDE4 install - applications not running

I have installed Mandriva 2008.1 with kde4 on two laptops.  This one, the 
ancient one, is extremely slow, but rock-solid.  The Acer, that should have 
been an improvement, won't run kontact, saying that it can't find mime type 
application/octet-stream.

What could have gone wrong?
