[KDE 4.1.3] GUI effects without compositing

Perhaps that doesn't solve your problem, but what card exactly do you have?

I have these cards:

AGP:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV350 AR [Radeon 9600]
01:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV350 AR [Radeon 9600] (Secondary)


PCI:

02:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] (rev 01)
02:05.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] (Secondary) (rev 01)


And I have no performance problems with compositing effects enabled, 
using "radeon" driver and "AccelMethod" "EXA" option in xorg.conf.
