Hiding the panel

Actually.. depending on what Desktop theme your using, some Themes have 
transparent or semi transparent panels.. 

On the Desktop right click > Desktop settings > Theme 

I use Slimglow at the moment (I like its clock) and my panel is semi-
transparent as is my Folderview :-)
