Desktop icons in kde4

Maybe I'm getting something wrong then.  The plasma applet pops up when a new 
device is plugged in, and in the configuration box I can see how to adjust 
how long it stays visible, but it is only visible for a few seconds, then 
disappears.  I can't see any way to access it to umount a device, for 
instance.  I have to go to dolphin for that.
