I have gone through all of Amarok's setting, yet I cannot find this
initial preference. I suspect that it is not in Amarok itself? How are
non-KDE apps handled? For instance, when I want to configure all video
to open in mplayer, where would I change the setting?

I'll head over to bugzilla and file a wish. I'd imagine that this is a
common problem.

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?
