Is it possible to hide backup files (*~) in Konqueror?

Depending on the editor being used, some allows you to set a prefix for the 
backup file. So you could prefix backup files with . and they will be hidden. 
The editor part of Kate (katepart, used in kwrite, quanta, kdevelop) allows 
this if I remember correctly.
