KDE 3.5.6: removed icons for mozilla, firefox etc.. ?

True, but they should be found by any KDE version as long as the environment 
variables are set correctly.

Check if

$ kde-config --path icon

contains the path where their packages installed them to 
(likey /usr/share/icons)
