Screen saver not automatically starting

Would anyone know of any reason why the screen saver in KDE 3.5.8 wouldn't 
automatically start?

I have specified that it should kick on after 5 minutes of inactivity.  I've 
played with the optioins to see if any combination would make things act 
differently, but nothing seems to be working.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.
