KMix and volume indication on shortcuts

Hi,
I have a multimedia keyboard, and my additional keys are operational. When I
used KDE 3.4.x (or at least I think it was back then), when I pressed 'volume
up' a screen appeared with the master volume indication, when KMix was
running. After I updated KDE to 3.5.x this indication stopped appearing, but
the volume control still works.
I've just noticed something even stranger: now in KDE 3.5.4, when I press
Ctrl+'Vol Down', which is shown in shortcuts as Ctrl+XF86AudioLowerVolume,
the indication overlay appears again, but the opposite (vol up) doesn't work.
Now I've checked all shortcut settings for each channel, and I didn't find
ctrl+vol up/down to be assigned anywhere. Is this built-in or? Any idea how I
could get it working and displaying the status?
Thanks...
