Tweaking system-wide file associations

Thanks for the reply, but I think this page is out of date.  It refers to
a nonexistent $HOME/.kde/share/config/profilerc.  I also tried editing
/usr/local/share/applnk/Office/xpdf.desktop
for instance, and inserting 
InitialPreference=9
without any change in behavior.
