Kmail "blue screen of wait" :)

Since I upgraded KMail recently, it now changes the right hand side of my 
layout to a big blue screen saying something to the effect of "wait while I 
retrieve messages".  I find it very annoying.  Is there anyway to return to 
the old behavior without downgrading KMail itself?
