kde 3.5.3 no longer authenticates proxy

I use a squid non-caching proxy with dante socks and dansguardian to control
access to the internet.

kde 3.5.0 traversed this authenticated firewall without a problem

3.5.3 won't

I disable proxies and then it wont use socks.

I can find no error messages other than not authenticated!
