Opera gets launched multiple times

I'd like to open URLs from KMail, Akregator etc in a new page in Opera.

In file associatios I've tried so far: 

opera -remote "openURL(%u,background-page)"
opera -newpage %u

The latter from a wrapper script, too.

This only works partly: the URL does get opened in a new page, but at the same 
time a new instance of Opera is launched, keeps clogging up the system's 
resources for 15 or 20 seconds, then quits itself again. 

This only happens from within KDE apps, not with any other. Gaim, Sylpheed, 
Licq, all fine.
What's wrong here?

Slackware -current, KDE 3.5.1, Problem exists since KDE 3.3.x.
