Font settings do not 'stick' between sessions

Thanks for the suggestions.
The [General] section in my ~/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals gets created when I
set the fonts using Control Centre, but when I log out the [General] section
gets removed. The font settings also seem to get put in ~/.kderc which does
not get deleted. Both of these files are owned by the user and have rw
permissions.
I also tried creating another user, with no ~/.kde3.4 directory or ~/.kderc
file and got the same effects.
