annoyance with kate window layout

first of all, i've got to say how impressed i am with the new features in
kde3.4. the eyecandy stuff is just... shiny! i love it. but i'm having one
problem that i'm hoping someone here can help me with in kate.

kate seems to be using a sort of pane system for it's documents & filesystem
panels and i really want to go back to what i had in 3.3x -- that being the
ability to:

  a. have the documents and filesystem panes share the left-side of the work
     area, one *above* the other.
  b. remove the projects pane altogether

as it now, having both panels open requires far too much of my work area (left
and right) and it's squeezing out the space for my code. i tried moving them
around like i did in 3.3 and while the silhouette during the move seems to
imply that the panels would share one side, releasing the left mouse button
just shoves them both on to the one side, allowing only one panel to be
viewable at a time.

please tell me there's an option somewhere i haven't checked and that this
isn't something that was removed for this release.
