Back Up Files

How do I get rid of the annoying backup files in KDE? I did rightclick --> 
new --> text file, wrote a file, saved it as "commands" and got a 
"commands~" backup file allong with it! This seams to happen with just about 
every document that I make :-(

P.S. I'm using Debian.
