desktop quicklaunch icons

I think I messed up my desktop in the following way:
I used to be able to drag the small icon from the address bar in my 
browser (Firefox) to create an icon on the desktop that was a quick link 
to the URL in the address bar (i.e., opens Firefox to the specified 
URL).  Now it gives me the prompt "filename for clipboard content" and 
simply saves the URL to the file I specify.  How do I reinstate the 
normal behavior?
