kdm, PAM and password expiration prompts

I guess that it is because there no window manager yet.
Maybe you're required to have the mouse over the input field in order to get
keyboard input.
Or you could try running a simple window manager along KDM.
Did you check if this is only happening with the Kerberos module?
It could be a KDM bug, maybe the login manger is usually required to open a
pseudo terminal for password exchange.
