artsdsp Problem

When I use artsdsp to run a program (small game) from a terminal everything 
works perfectly (also works from the "Run" dialogue) -- I can run juK etc. at 
the same time and sounds from both programs are heard.  If I add an entry to 
for the game to the menu (artsdsp gamename) with menu edit however, the sound 
stutters badly.  I don't have a clue why this happens.  Does anyone have an 
explanation or cure.
