The first problem will be related to your distros startkde script and how it 
handles upgrades so you need to examine it and see what is happening. Ideally 
you should use separate startkde scripts if you have multiple versions or at 
least modify your script appropriately. The startkde script is usually 
written to hanle changes to the config for a new version but not going 
backwards.  Make sure the correct startkde is run for which version you are 
using especially if one kde is from a distro and one is compiled vanilla. The 
distro script will be heavily modified.
I dont think kmail is adjustable how you speak. It has always had 3 columns as 
far back as I can remember. Maybe you had it covered up with a narrow column.
