KDE 3.4: Protocols not working in Konqueror

I have just installed KDE 3.4  (via Konstruct and "make install" to 
build everything).

Unfortunately, Konqueror  is not behaving the way I expected.  Several 
protocols do not work.
For instance, when I type   "drives:/" in the location bar,  or "devices:/"
I do get an error  that the protocol is not available.


When I switch back to KDE 3.3.2, everything is ok.

Can somebody be of help here, and explain what I need to do to give 
Konqueror  its full capabilities?
The underlying linux distribution is Suse 9.2 Professional
