As others have told you it is not a bug it is normal behaviour of all shells
(bash ash csh etc) that I know of.
The problem is in your scripts which are badly written if they are meant to
run in a linux environment.
There can be no logical reason why you cant eliminate the double tabs since
you say they are only used for indenting. It is for this very reason that
almost all IDE's (Integrated Development Environment) or advanced text editor
give you the option to replace the tabs with spaces.
So why dont you stop being pedantic and simply open the scripts in kate and
then save them again so the tabs will convert to spaces? In the Kate setup
you can set whether each tab should be 4 or 8 or whatever spaces.
