Silence allover ..

I used to have sound working on my Suse 9.0 linux box. However, after  
upgrading 3.1 -> 3.2  the sound was gone. downgrading did not help. 
Neither does 3.3

Everything looks fine (no error messages in boot log etc. )
Following a Sound HOWTO, I sent a sound file to the sound device, like

cat endoftheworld > /dev/dsp

but nothing audible!

When I boot windows, everything is ok!

How do I systematically tackle this problem?
