extremely long start up times

Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions.
The consensus seems to be that the DNS lookups (/etc/resolv.conf) are causing
my problems. I didn't want to go too long without posting replies back.
Unfortunately, I haven't had time to do the homework necessary on my end to
give adequate feedback to everyone's suggestions. I will research my network
problems and post again when I have time. It may be awhile.
