desktop icons repositioned after logout

Hello,

I am new to the list, so I apologize in advance if this has been asked
recently. I attempted to search the archives and found some related
info, but it was 3 or 4 years old and not of much help. If I should
have looked elsewhere before asking the list, I'd appreciate a gentle
correction.

I am running KDE 3.3.0 on a Gentoo system. I like to keep certain icons
in specific locations on my desktop (e.g., Floppy/CD-ROM in upper left,
home directory and others in upper right, trash in lower right, etc). I
fastidiously drag my icons into place and all is well until I log out.
When I log out and log back in, I find that some or all of my icons have
moved. Generally most are organized on the left side as I'd expect an
auto-position to happen. However, it's not perfect and it varies a
little bit. For example, there is currently a pattern something like:

###
###
#######
###
###
###

(ie, most seem to be autoplaced, but there is a weird strip that are
clearly not)

Sometimes some of the icons stay in the right place while others get
reorganized, etc. It seems like it might be somewhat worse if I reboot
in between logins, but I really haven't carefully tested that.

Is this normal? Am I crazy? Does my description even make sense? I
can live with this, but I really expect my icons to hold their positions
across logins / reboots.

Any assistance/advice would be most appreciated. Please let me know if
you need more information.

Thanks,

joey
